15 Dec 2008 - Southsea Seafront Cycling Route Consultation

Portsmouth cycle Forum welcomes Portsmouth City Council’s initiative to look at cycling provision in the seafront area of Southsea.

A safe, through cycle route along the whole seafront would be a major attraction for the young and the old, bringing more people to an area which has been in decline for many years.

Just along the coast, at Brighton, there is a safe cycling route along the whole of their seafront and it it very popular with leisure and commuting cyclists alike.

If we are serious about improving health and wellbeing, then we must encourage more people to exercise and cycling is one of those activities which is relatively inexpensive yet very beneficial.

The consultation is not about cycling on the promenade.  It’s about providing a practical, safe and enjoyable route for people on bicycles in the seafront area.

Cycling is green and healthy, reduces the number of cars on the road. It’s also a great way to enjoy our seafront, for residents and visitors.

Portsmouth City Council is looking at ways to improve cycling facilities, while making sure safety is maintained.  They’re trying to balance the needs of all users – including people on foot and drivers.  They would like as many people as possible to have their say.

There are four options to choose from and these are explained in the current edition of Flagship magazine (see attachment at the bottom of this page).  Alternatively, see www.portsmouth.gov.uk/living/593.html or pick up a leaflet at council officers and public libraries. Please tell PCC which of them you prefer.
